My son learned from his Nonno

how to cook his special

tomato sauce. Triple flavours of onion,

celery, diced carrots—used the world over for a starter,

brought to translucent gold in a splash of olive oil,

the good stuff.

There is a system. A rhythm.

Time taken. Fresh basil added.

The smell.

The sauce simmers all day on the stove, tended;

until ladled over pasta, showered

with fresh parmesan, peppered.

You might have to have Italian in your blood—

to remember that taste, the world over,

begins and ends with that most basic ingredient,

we call love.

Cooking, or anything done well, with love, is another way we can come to contemplate the gentle built-in rhythms of life. Enter in on a deeper love. Become more Christlike in our approach, even if that might not seem obvious at first glance. It is clear when we meet someone engaged in a deep work. We can spot, even taste, the difference; the goodness within.
